The Riviera del Conero is one of our favourite destinations because it offers places where you can enjoy the true essence of wild nature.

One of these enchanting places is undoubtedly the Due Sorelle beach, a hidden gem, difficult to access and considered one of the best beaches in the Adriatic.

The Due Sorelle beach is undoubtedly the most famous of the beaches of the Riviera del Conero and one of the most beautiful and fascinating in Italy. This fame makes it a favourite destination for many tourists from various neighbouring towns. In this article we would like to give you some valuable tips so that you can fully appreciate the beauty of this beach in complete tranquillity.

One of the best beaches in the Adriatic sea: where is located?

The “Spiaggia delle due sorelle” is located between Portonovo and Sirolo, in a bay overlooked by a steep cliff and the Passo del Lupo.

The distance from Portonovo to Sirolo is about 3 km as the crow flies, while the distance from San Michele beach to Sirolo is about 1.5 km.

What it looks like

The Due Sorelle beach is quite small and differs from a typical tongue of sand to take on the appearance of a picturesque “cove”. The beach is a combination of pebbles and light-coloured sand, with crystal blue waters. To the north, the beach is bordered by the Two Sisters, two imposing rocks that act as guardians for those arriving from Portonovo.

The southern part of the beach ends with the Grotta della Marchesina, a fascinating cave where you can lie on the sand at low tide.

The “spiaggia delle Due Sorelle” is overlooked by the walls of Mount Conero, therefore there is a fenced area where it is forbidden to stand due to the possible risk of falling rocks.

Due Sorelle Beach how to get there by the standard way: the ferry

Currently, the only “official” way to reach Due Sorelle Beach is by sea, with the ferry being the standard and most popular solution. You can book the ferry and find all the useful information about prices and timetables on the website of the Conero ferry operators at this link.

The main ports of departure are Numana and Sirolo, with departures from 8.30 a.m. and returns scheduled until 3.30 p.m. Tickets cost €30 for adults, €10 for children aged 3 to 10 and free for children under the age of 3.

Our advice is to reach the beach by your own, for example by renting a kayak or a sup in Portonovo or Sirolo.

We recommend that you contact the rental company to check whether you can use the kayak or sup depending on the weather and sea conditions. On certain days, if the sea is rough or the wind is strong, it may be necessary to postpone the experience to a calmer day for safety reasons.

In Portonovo you have two options for chartering, either from the bay of Portonovo or from the beach of Capannina. The choice between the two does not make much difference as the rental costs are generally similar. In our case, from past experience, we have usually relied on Conero Style, where the staff are very helpful and well trained.

The cost of renting a kayak or sup has risen slightly in recent years. At the moment you can expect to pay between €80 and €100 to hire a kayak or two SUP.

The journey from Portonovo

Once you have left your car, you are ready to go! Don’t worry, life jackets are included in the rental service if you don’t feel safe. Your journey along the coast will take you through a unique experience, passing by other beautiful and picturesque beaches: the first of these you will come across is Vela Beach, so called because of the rock in front of the beach, which resembles a large sail suspended between the sky and the sea. All along the coast you will find numerous coves that you can reach by your own means, such as the Sassi Bianchi beach, the Forni beach and the Gabbiani beach; we warn you, it will be hard to resist the temptation to stop in these coves to take a dip in the crystal clear waters and enjoy a moment of total relax. So take your time, but be careful not to stop too close to the mountain walls, as there is a high risk of landslides.

The average time it takes to reach Due Sorelle beach from Portonovo, excluding stops, is about an hour, but this estimate can vary depending on your level of fitness and the sea conditions.

Once you have visited these coves, you will come to another beach, a little wider and made up mainly of pebbles, just in front of the two imposing rocks that give your destination its name: the Two Sisters (Due Sorelle).
In the morning you may find a few people at the beach, but as the day goes on the number of visitors increases. There is nothing better than relaxing on the beach or taking a refreshing swim after a long journey.

The kayaks and SUPs you use to reach the bay must be tied to special buoys located a few metres from the shore (if you dock on land, the lifeguard on duty will be careful to remind you).

Another alternative to renting a kayak or SUP was to reach the beach on foot from Sirolo. Unfortunately, the path is currently closed and inaccessible due to a municipal decree. However, we hope that the local authorities will take the necessary steps to reopen it, as it is one of the most fascinating routes we have had the privilege of walking.

Spiaggia delle due sorelle Conero’s most realaxing beach

So, while you are enjoying some well-deserved relaxation, the magical moment of three o’clock in the afternoon arrives…

Suddenly, everyone starts gathering their belongings, folding their umbrellas and getting dressed, and the ferry appears. The magic happens in a few minutes: the beach is completely empty, leaving you alone with the few people who have made their own way to the beach.

At this moment, you can fully enjoy the spectacle of the surrounding nature. You will finally be able to hear the soothing sound of the waves, which had previously been drowned out by the chatter of other tourists. You will be able to breathe the sea air, which will be lighter and fresher, and be refreshed by the breeze that you will feel when the beach is shaded in the afternoon.

It is a truly unique experience that will allow you to fully appreciate the beauty and serenity of this corner of paradise on the Due Sorelle beach, in our opinion one of the best beaches in the Adriatic sea.

Measures to be taken

Obviously, it is important to respect the closing time of the rental service. As you may be tired after a day on the beach, remember that the return journey may take longer than the outward journey. Allow yourself the luxury of being flexible with your schedule.

Another valuable tip is to let someone know where you are going, such as the rental company, lifeguards or the owners of the establishment where you are staying. You never know what might happen, and remember that there is no telephone coverage on Due Sorelle beach, so having someone who knows where you are could prove essential in an emergency.

Finally, we recommend that you ask the lifeguards or use an application to monitor the weather throughout the day. Don’t just check for the possibility of rain, but also keep an eye on wind conditions and sea currents. If the wind picks up in the afternoon, it could make your return difficult and get you into trouble, so it is important to be informed and prepared.

Tarta Days

Regardless of how you arrived at Due Sorelle beach, here is another valuable tip: check this link to find out on which days the turtle is released at Due Sorelle beach.

Witnessing the moment when a turtle, after being cared for, finds its freedom in the sea is a truly exciting experience. However, bear in mind that the beach will be much more crowded on this day. Also, the moment of release will only last a few moments as the turtle, frightened by the journey and the presence of so many people on the beach, will quickly head towards the sea.

So, if you are interested in this extraordinary experience, plan your trip so that you can be on the beach on turtle release days, but bear in mind that there may be a greater influx of visitors on these occasions.

What to bring

Here is a list of the most important things to bring with you:

  • Sun cream and a hat (we advise you to go “in creamed” with a good bit of protection as the trip will be entirely under the sun);
  • A cloth to lie on;
  • Waterproof bag: as you will have to moor your kayak to one of the buoys a few metres from the beach, you will need to put your belongings in a waterproof bag to safely transport them;
  • Water and food: there are no bars on the beach;
  • Climbing shoes, if you want to explore between the Two Sisters.

We hope that we have provided you with useful information for planning your visit to Due Sorelle beach and that we have encouraged you to live the experience of staying on this wonderful beach in peace, enjoying its beauty in solitude! We assure you that the effort to get there will be well rewarded! If you would like to know more about the Conero Riviera, we invite you to read the related articles and, as always… trip to try!
