How much does it cost to go to Bora Bora?

Bora Bora is one of the farthest places from Europe, so far away and so beautiful that it seems an unattainable goal, the perfect dream destination. This island in French Polynesia has an unmistakable appearance: a large mountain covered in green vegetation, completely surrounded by a lagoon with crystal clear blue water and a ring of coral reefs.

A trip to Bora Bora is a unique experience and of course, all travellers who dream of visiting this incredible place ask the question: “How much does it cost to go to Bora Bora? Prices in Bora Bora are certainly higher than in other locations and vary mainly depending on the type of accommodation you choose, but there are also other variables to consider. In this article we will try to understand how much does it cost to travel to Bora Bora.

International flights: travel to Bora Bora cost

The first thing to note is that there are no direct international flights to Bora Bora, only domestic flights from Tahiti or the other small islands of French Polynesia. Therefore, the international flight will take you to the Papeete airport in Tahiti.

The prices of international flights to Bora Bora, especially those linking Tahiti with the rest of the world, do not vary much as there are very few airlines serving Tahiti’s international airport, mainly Air Tahiti Nui, the national airline.

The international cities from which you can fly directly to Papeete are Los Angeles and Auckland, so from Europe you have to fly to Los Angeles from Paris Charles de Gaulle airport. So, to begin to answer the question “how much does it cost to go to Bora Bora?”, we can say that the cost of an international flight from Paris to Papeete is on average between €2,000 and €2,500 per person, depending on the period and how far in advance you book.

On the other hand, if you come from Auckland, the cost of a flight to Tahiti is around $500, while from Los Angeles the average is $1,200.

Domestic flight: the cost to travel to Bora Borafrom Tahiti

How much does it cost to go to Bora Bora: Accommodation options

The choice of accommodation will determine the cost of your holiday in Bora Bora, as it is the main variable. Depending on the accommodation you choose, the price difference can be considerable.

Most of the facilities on offer in Bora Bora are resorts, but in recent years the island has also been populated by guesthouses, which are much cheaper than the resorts and offer a different service.

To give you an idea of prices in Bora Bora, we can tell you that a night in a resort costs an average of €500 per person, while you can find guesthouses or hotels with an average price of €100 per person per night.

It is important to remember that these are average prices and that in the same resort you can find accommodation with very different costs: a room on the beach or inside the resort has a completely different cost than the classic overwater bungalows, which can even cost more than €1,000 per person per night.

Services offered aside, an important consideration to make about the facilities is that most of the resorts are located on the motu surrounding the island (the ring of reefs around Bora Bora), while the guest houses are located on the island. Consequently, the view you can enjoy from the resorts is very different from that of the guest houses: is it worth the difference in price? This is a personal choice, we opted for a resort on the motu and we can assure you that the location and the views we could witness every day are priceless!

Excursion in Bora Bora cost

During a holiday on Bora Bora, participating in excursions is practically a given. On Bora Bora, there are many experiences that can be had, from snorkelling trips, diving, swimming with sharks, quad bike or jet ski rides, island trekking and many more.

Obviously, all these activities vary in price depending on the duration and the experience: a one-day snorkelling trip has an average approximate cost of €150 per person, a combined quad + jet ski trip costs €200 per person. In general, consider a minimum of 100 € per person for each excursion.

How much does it cost to travel to Bora Bora: Food and Shopping

Because Bora Bora depends on imported raw materials and is a considerable distance from the mainland, the cost of living is high. The formula offered by most resorts and guesthouses is bed and breakfast, so you will need to add in the cost of lunch and dinner, as well as the cost of groceries.

In general, a light lunch with a single dish such as a sandwich will cost from €20 per person, while a single dish eaten in a local restaurant will average around €30. For an ‘elegant’ dinner, you could end up spending much more: a dinner in a seafood restaurant can cost up to €100 per person.

As for drinks, a small bottle of still water and a can of beer cost around €3, cocktails €15 and a bottle of wine starts at €30.

If you like shopping, there are shops on the main island and in the resorts where you can buy souvenirs, jewellery and clothes. Souvenirs are inexpensive, while clothes are more expensive than the European average. When it comes to jewellery, French Polynesia is one of the leading producers of pearls, especially black pearls. The cost of black pearl jewellery is proportional to the size and purity of the pearl, and is comparable to prices in European jewellery shops.

Travel to Bora Bora cost: Additional Bora Bora prices

There are some costs that must still be considered when you want to know how much does it cost to go to Bora Bora, and some of these cannot be avoided.

Specifically, one of the costs that you will have to is that of ESTA authorisation if you don’t come from USA, which is required for any traveller transiting through the United States, regardless of whether it is just a technical stopover at LAX or a stay. The cost of obtaining ESTA authorisation is approximately €15 per person.

Other possible additional costs that you have to consider are as follows:

  • A plane flight to get to Paris: if you are not in the area, you will have to take a plane flight to get to Paris. We left from Italy, specifically Bologna, so we took an Air France flight to get to Paris (around 100 € per person if booked well in advance).
  • Parking at the airport: if you have to leave your car at the airport, you should expect to pay a minimum of 10 € per day.
  • Travel insurance: the cost of insurance is an issue that has become very much in vogue in recent years because of Covid and has now become one of those ‘fixed’ costs that you anticipate when embarking on a trip. In the case of a trip to Bora Bora, given the type of holiday and the cost, having good travel insurance is an important and crucial aspect. A one-week insurance policy for a single trip abroad costs less than €50 per person.
  • A possible night in Tahiti if you cannot take advantage of a good connection between the international and domestic flight: as we arrived in Tahiti in the evening on the trip to Bora Bora, we spent the first night in Papeete and then took the domestic flight to Bora Bora the following morning. You can find hotels in Papeete and not far from the airport at reasonable prices (a 4-star hotel costs about € 100 per person or even something less).

How much does it cost to travel to Bora Bora: let’s sum up!

After all the considerations we have just reported, let’s try to summarise how much does it cost to go to Bora Bora! Here are the prices for Bora Bora, considering a one-week holiday in a mid-range resort, if you come from Europe:

International flight: €2,500
Domestic flight A/R: 400 €
7 nights’ accommodation in a resort: € 3,500
Lunches and dinners: € 700
Excursions: € 300

The total of the costs we have just mentioned is € 7,400, to which you will have to add other possible expenses such as the purchase of souvenirs, any extra drinks, parking the car at the airport, travel insurance and ESTA paperwork. If, on the other hand, you opt for a mid-range hotel or guest house, the cost of your trip is reduced and you could end up with a figure of around €5,000 per person.

If you come from America the total is between 5.000 $ and 6.000 $ and for the lucky ones that come from Australia and New Zealand the cost is about 4.000-5000 $.
