Mauritius is well known for being an island paradise with white sandy beaches and palm trees in whose shade you can relax while sipping coconut milk, a perfect honeymoon destination. We decided to spend 10 days in Mauritius and as we were preparing our itinerary, we realised that this island has much more to offer than just its beautiful beaches.

The Jardin de Pamplemousse is a botanical garden located in the north centre of Mauritius, but to call it a garden is really an understatement! It is a real park divided into sections, including the Grande Serre where you can find various tropical plants, the Rose Garden and the Water Lily Garden. A full visit can take a couple of hours or more, but we assure you that the Jardin de Pamplemousse is absolutely one of the things to see in Mauritius!
This garden was founded in 1769 by Pierre Poivre and is one of the oldest gardens in the world, which was declared a UNESCO heritage site in 2008. The variety of plants is enormous, in some areas you will have the impression that you are in the middle of a real forest, surrounded by tall trees and exotic plants, in others you will find water pools and fountains where water lilies abound.
Inside the garden there is also an old colonial house that can be visited.

Things to see in Mauritius: Jardin de Pamplemousse
Tea is one of the main resources that are produced in Mauritius and we recommend that you visit the Bois Cheri factory because it is a wonderful place and absolutely one of the places to explore in Mauritius to learn more about life on the island.
The tour includes a visit to the factory, where you can witness the entire production process, starting from the harvest to the production of the classic sachets that we soak in hot water. You can also walk through the fields and enjoy the expanses of green that stretch as far as the eye can see. At the end of your visit to the factory, we recommend that you stop at the cafeteria, where you can have a tasting of the various types of tea that are produced and stop by the shop to buy some boxes to take home or give as souvenirs.
One of the places to visit in Mauritius is absolutely the little church of Notre Dame Auxiliatrice, which is located in the north of Mauritius, along the road that runs along the coast and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
We recommend that you make a quick stop here to take photos and admire the scenery: this charming place offers an exceptional contrast with its red roof, the green of the lawn and the blue of the sea behind. It is certainly one of the most beautiful sights on the island and one of the places that absolutely belong on the “Things to see in Mauritius” list.
Which are the best places to explore in Mauritius?
Definitely the Tamarin Falls if you love walking and trekking.
The Tamarin Falls is a natural wonder located in the south of the island. This complex comprises seven waterfalls, some of which can be reached via paths that branch off the main road. Swimming is also possible at some of these waterfalls.
To reach these seven waterfalls, there are various paths with different levels of gradient. To tackle them at their best, we recommend that you wear trekking shoes or footwear suitable for hiking.
The paths are not always clearly signposted, so we recommend that you do this hike accompanied by an experienced guide so as not to find yourself in difficult situations. During our visit, we were lucky enough to find a local guide on site, a very nice young man. A trip to Mauritius must definitely include a visit to the wonderful Black River Gorges National Park, one of the things to see in Mauritius absolutely.
The Black River Gorges National Park is an important nature reserve located inland in the south of Mauritius. This park, which covers an area of almost 70 square kilometres, offers various hiking possibilities, suitable for various levels of fitness. Along the various access roads to the park, you will find information points where you can obtain details on the available hiking options.
Nature within the park is extremely lush and diverse, making it a paradise for bird watchers.
In addition, within the park, there are several lookouts offering spectacular panoramic views of the Black River Gorge and stretching all the way to the sea, such as Maccabée, where you might encounter some monkeys!
The Rhumerie Chamarel is one of the Mauritius must see places as it is an enchanting place, worth a visit even if you are not a rum lover.
The rhumerie has been in operation for almost 50 years and is located near the Coloured Lands of Chamarel. The visit to the rhumerie includes a guided part during which you can learn all about the production of rum, starting with the harvesting of sugar cane, and see the machinery in operation. If you wish, at the end of the visit you can have a tasting of the various rums that are produced. Classic rums of different vintages are produced as well as aromatic rums, such as vanilla.
Inside the rhumerie there is a bar and a restaurant. We definitely recommend you stop by the restaurant for lunch…excellent!

The Alexandra waterfalls are located along the road to go to the Colored Lands of Chamarel and are worth a short stop. They are about thirty meters high and are part of the Black River Gorge National Park.
There is an excellent viewpoint in front of the waterfalls where you can stop to take some photos and admire the view: it is located along the road to reach the Colored Lands of Chamarel, near which there is free parking.
The land of seven colours is located near Rhumerie Chamarel and is in a park where you can also see giant tortoises. But that is not the reason why this place is one of the most famous things to see in Mauritius: the coloured lands offer a unique colour spectacle! You don’t need much time to visit this place; if you stop for photos and take the walk around this colourful escarpment, an hour is more than enough time.
To really appreciate the colours of the land, we recommend that you go there mid-morning, when the sun is high in the sky.
Ganga Talao is a lake of volcanic origin located near the Gorge National Park where there is a Buddhist temple and two large statues depicting Shiva and Durga. It is a very quiet and pleasant place where you can take a relaxing walk around the lake and take some photos of the temples and it is definitely one of the things to see in Mauritius.
It is possible that in the car park you will also meet some monkeys looking for food or something to steal from you!
The volcano of Trou aux Cerfs is located approximately in the center of the island. The volcano is inactive and its walls are completely covered by vegetation. Visiting this site will not take you long because you can partially go around the volcano crest and you can park nearby.
