Amsterdam offers a wide variety of places to explore, from magnificent flower-filled parks to museums and the historic centre. At the heart of the city are the charming canals, the museum district and the iconic red light district.
This destination is perfect for a short break of a few days and in this article we present our ‘3 day Itinerary Amsterdam’ to visit Amsterdam in 3 days and make the most of your time!
We explored Amsterdam in the spring, taking advantage of a traditional three-day ‘extended weekend’, and this city is certainly worth visiting in the spring, when you can witness the beautiful, colourful spectacle of the tulip blossom.
The city of Amsterdam is full of fascinating places to visit, from museums, such as the famous Van Gogh Museum, to the picturesque canal area and the red light district. Most of the main attractions in Amsterdam are within walking distance, with the exception of the beautiful Keukenhof park. All these places can be visited in a few days, with pleasant walks through the neighbourhoods and the city centre!
Below we share with you our ‘3 day Amsterdam itinerary’ that we followed to make the most of our three days in Amsterdam, hoping that it will inspire you when planning your future visit to this beautiful European city!
On the first day of our ‘3 day Itinerary Amsterdam’, we landed at the airport in the late morning.
We quickly reached the city by private transfer and after checking in at our hotel, located just outside the centre along Beethovenstraat, we took possession of our ‘special’ room, with a bath and shower in a glass tube inside the room!
After a brief refreshment, we set off on a walk to the Heineken Experience, one of the must-see places on your ‘Amsterdam what to see in 3 days’ list and the first stop on our Amsterdam itinerary.
During the walk, we stopped at a local brewery for lunch, where we delighted our taste buds with the tasty local meatballs accompanied by locally brewed craft beer.
Once refreshed, we continued our itinerary to visit Amsterdam in 3 days, heading to the Heineken Experience, located on the Stadhouderskade, overlooking the Singelgracht, Amsterdam’s outer canal that demarcates the historic area from the more modern part of the city.
The tour of the Heineken Experience lasted about two hours (although the time spent at the bar can vary depending on how many beers you want to try!) and was a very interesting experience, allowing us to learn about the history of this famous company since its inception and to appreciate the brewing process.
After leaving the Heineken Experience, we spent the rest of the afternoon exploring the picturesque canal area. We strolled along the well-maintained cobbled streets that line the canals, stopping to take pictures on the picturesque bridges that connect the concentric rings of the canal system.
The last, most central canal is lined with shops selling a wide variety of bulbs and flowers in spring, creating an explosion of colour that follows the flow of the water.
We ended the first day of our ‘3 day Amsterdam Itinerary’ with dinner in a typical canal-side restaurant, admiring the lights of the typical houses, which were illuminated and reflected on the water of the canals, creating a truly impressive panorama!

On the morning of the second day of our ‘3 day Amsterdam Itinerary’, we set off early to explore the Museum Quarter, with a particular focus on a visit to the Van Gogh Museum. The Van Gogh Museum, and the Museum Quarter in general, is a must-see on your ‘Must see places in three days in Amsterdam’ list.
Located close to the historic centre of Amsterdam, this area is a fascinating contrast of old and new, developed around a main square and home to various museums, most of which are housed in modern buildings with distinctive architecture. Among the most famous are the Van Gogh Museum, the Moco Museum, the Stedelijk Museum and the Rijks Museum. Of course, to visit all the museums in this area would take much more time (probably 3 days would be the minimum to see them all!).
We spent some time exploring this square, which practically serves as a city park where you can relax on the grass, and took a short walk to explore the area.
In the morning we had planned to visit the Van Gogh Museum. This museum houses the world’s largest collection of works by the famous painter Vincent Van Gogh, including masterpieces such as ‘The Potato Eaters’, ‘The Almond Blossom’, ‘The Bedroom’ and numerous versions of his self-portraits. We recommend that you allow a couple of hours for the visit, in addition to the time needed to enter the museum.
After visiting the Van Gogh Museum, we continued with our 3 day Amsterdam itinerary and headed to another museum attraction, Madame Tussauds Wax Museum, located on the famous Dam Square. A visit to this museum is definitely lighter than traditional museum visits, as it offers the chance to walk among life-size wax statues of famous people and take fun pictures with them. It is a good choice if you are accompanied by children, for example, or just fancy a fun visit.
Our visit to Madame Tussauds took just over an hour, leaving us free to spend the rest of the afternoon exploring Dam Square and the Old Town.
We also chose to dine in this area that evening. As the sun went down, we took a walk in the famous Red Light District, a symbol of Amsterdam’s open-mindedness and located near the central canal area. Definitely, a walk in this neighbourhood cannot be missing from your Amsterdam itinerary to visit Amsterdam in 3 days!

On the third day of our ‘3 day Amsterdam Itinerary’, we dedicated the morning to our first stop, the Anne Frank House. The Anne Frank House is now a museum and is located on the Prinsengracht canal, not far from the city centre and within a pleasant walk of a few minutes.
Visiting the Anne Frank House was definitely the most moving experience during our tour of Amsterdam. During the visit, we were able to explore the rooms where the Frank family and others hid for almost two years during the Second World War, including the annex where Anne wrote her famous diary.
After visiting the Anne Frank House, we decided to take a relaxing stroll along the picturesque canals and through the Old Town, trying to lift our spirits. We then made our way to Amsterdam Central Station. From here we took the train to the beautiful Keukenhof tulip park, just outside the city.
Keukenhof Park is an extraordinary place, where we spent a pleasant afternoon strolling through the vast lawns covered with flowering bulbs of various types, including tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and many others.
The surroundings of the park are equally fascinating, with colourful tulip fields and windmills in the background. We recommend that you spend at least half a day in the park, as it is a very pleasant place to visit. In the park you can take nice walks around the flowerbeds, or relax on a bench or at a café table and admire the hundreds of different colours that surround you!
Keukenhof is definitely one of the must-sees on your ‘What to see in three days in Amasterdam’ list if you are visiting this beautiful city in the spring. If you want to know more about this fantastic park and get some useful information on how to plan your visit, we recommend you read the article below!
