Fuerteventura is a Spanish island in the Canary Islands archipelago, characterised by wild landscapes and a variety of unique beaches. From the golden sand of Playa de Sotavento to the dark volcanic rocks of Pared, the island offers completely different beaches.

Which are the Fuerteventura top beaches? Here is our list of the 7 best beaches in Fuerteventura that you absolutely cannot miss!

The 7 best beaches in Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is an extraordinary place, especially loved by water sports enthusiasts in search of wind, but also by those who simply want to relax on the beach. The island’s beaches are extremely varied, with a distinction between those on the east and west coasts. The western beaches are wilder and ideal for those who enjoy water sports, while the eastern beaches are generally quieter. But which are the top beaches Fuerteventura? Which is the nicest beach in Fuerteventura?

In general, we recommend visiting both coasts, as the west coast offers wild and evocative landscapes with the ocean in all its power, while the east coast offers golden sandy beaches, perfect for relaxation. However, there is one constant in all these beaches: the wind, as the island’s name suggests, is the undisputed ruler of Fuerteventura!

We spent about ten days exploring the beaches of both the north and south of the island, and we would like to share with you the Fuerteventura top beaches you should not miss during your visit to this island!

Sotavento Beach, the nicest beach in Fuerteventura

Playa de Sotavento is without a doubt one of the best beaches in Fuerteventura. Located in the southern part of Fuerteventura, on the east coast near Jandia, this beach has a unique phenomenon: at low tide, a tongue of sand emerges from the water, forming a picturesque inland lagoon.

If you decide to visit this beach at low tide, we recommend taking a dip in the lagoon and enjoying its crystal clear waters. On the other hand, if the wind is stronger, you may see people enjoying exciting kitesurfing or windsurfing sessions in the lagoon.

We recommend that you plan your visit on days when the wind is moderate and the water is calm so that you can fully appreciate the beauty of the lagoon’s azure to blue colours. In addition to the lagoon and its extraordinary palette of colours, an added value of this beach is its total isolation, as there are no structures to disturb the landscape. This is something to bear in mind if you want to spend time here: make sure you bring everything you need, such as food and water.

In our opinion, Playa de Sotavento is the nicest beach in Fuerteventura!

Top beaches in Fuerteventura: Playa de Cofete

In the southern part of Fuerteventura, on the west coast, is the striking Playa de Cofete, one of the top beaches Fuerteventura. This beach differs significantly from its predecessors in that the west coast is more exposed to wind and weather, making it a paradise for surfers.

Playa de Cofete is dominated by imposing mountains of black volcanic rock, giving the landscape a truly wild appearance. The sea is often rough due to the wind, so be careful if you want to swim. Close to this beach is the Mirador de Cofete, a viewpoint that can be reached by car and offers stunning views of the beach.

We recommend a long walk along the coastline to the Roque del Moro, an imposing pinnacle rising out of the sea.

The wildest of Fuerteventura beaches: Playa de La Pared

Playa de La Pared is also located on the west coast of Fuerteventura and, like Playa de Cofete, has a wild and unspoilt character. To get to this beach, you have to park your car in an elevated area and walk down a path that winds between the imposing black rocks overlooking the coast.

We recommend visiting this beach in the late afternoon to enjoy the spectacle of surfers braving the waves and to admire the sunset over the sea, which gives this place a unique atmosphere. For the spectacle and atmosphere that this beach offers, we believe that Playa de la Pared is one of the Fuerteventura top beaches.

Playa Matorral – Morro Jable

Playa Matorral lies to the south of Playa de Sotavento. This beach is characterised by a long stretch of golden sand and, even in high season, there is plenty of space for you to find peace and tranquillity. Behind the beach is the village of Morro Jable, where you will find various tourist facilities such as apartments, houses, restaurants and shops. Because of these facilities, Playa Matorral can be a little busier than other, more isolated beaches.

We recommend that you take some time for a relaxing walk along this beach and explore the wooden walkways that lead to the lighthouse, which is located approximately halfway along Playa Matorral.

La Concha Beach – El Cotillo

Playa de La Concha, located near El Cotillo, is a very popular destination, especially among young people. This beach is located in a small sheltered cove on the northwest coast of Fuerteventura. The waters in this area are calm and peaceful, while the sand is fine and white. Playa de La Concha is undoubtedly one of the best beaches in Fuerteventura.

These characteristics make it particularly suitable for families with children. Facilities such as toilets and showers are available nearby, as well as several bars and restaurants.

As the beach is not very large, it can get very crowded during the high season. If you want to avoid the crowds, we recommend visiting in the early hours of the morning.

The 7 Fuerteventura top beaches: Playa de Las Dunas – Corralejo

Playa de Las Dunas is definitely one of the Fuerteventura top beaches. Playa de Las Dunas is perhaps the most famous beach in Fuerteventura and is located on the north-east coast of the island, not far from the capital, Corralejo.

The dunes of Corralejo form an authentic natural park, crossed by a single road and characterised by the absence of buildings, with the exception of a few hotels. To get to the beach you have to park along the road and cross the dunes.

The beach is extremely long and offers plenty of space for those seeking peace and quiet. You may also be lucky enough to find a sheltered spot behind one of the volcanic rock shelters that line the beach.

Playa Las Dunas, with its light golden sand and turquoise sea, is definitely one of the best beaches in Fuerteventura. On calm days the water is transparent and crystal clear. Some parts of the beach are used by kite and wind surfers.

Playa de Costa Calma

Playa de Costa Calma is the last of the beaches in the southern part of Fuerteventura that we are talking about, but it is no less beautiful for that, on the contrary! Playa de Costa Calma is without a doubt one of the best beaches in Fuerteventura. This beach is located on the east coast, close to the small town of Costa Calma, which consists mainly of apartments and hotels.

Playa de Costa Calma is a long stretch of golden sand, ideal for relaxing and swimming, and not particularly frequented by surfers. An interesting curiosity is that in the southern part of the beach there is a stretch flanked by a high cliff which is home to a small colony of squirrels.

We wish you a good trip to discover the magnificent Fuerteventura and its wild beaches and as always… trip to try!
